How to Show Item Durability in Minecraft Java Edition

Hey everybody, it’s UnderMyCap and welcome back to another video! Today I’m going to be showing you how to show durability on items in Minecraft Java Edition. This is super simple to do and all you have to do is use a very simple keyboard command. Unfortunately this won’t work on Bedrock Edition, but if you’re on Java Edition, don’t worry — this will work for you!

Step 1: Open the Debug Menu with F3

The first thing you want to do is make sure that you can press the F3 key. When you hit F3, all of the debug information should pop up on your screen. If you do not see this on your computer, you’ll want to make sure that you hold the FN key on your keyboard at the same time as pressing F3. When done correctly, you will see the full debug menu appear on your screen.

Step 2: Enable Advanced Tooltips with F3 + H

The second step is to press the F3 key and the H key at the same time. When you do this, you’ll notice that the debug menu pops up and displays the message “Advanced tooltips shown” — this means the feature has been successfully enabled!

Seeing the Durability in Action

Don’t worry if nothing seems to change on your item right away. As soon as you enable Advanced Tooltips, you will notice some NBT text appearing at the bottom of the item tooltip — this is completely normal. To actually see the durability display, you do need to use the item for a little bit. Once the item has been used, the durability will show up on the tooltip just as expected.

Quick Recap

  • Press F3 (or FN + F3) to open the Debug Menu
  • Press F3 + H to enable Advanced Tooltips
  • Use your item to start seeing the durability display
  • Note: This method only works on Minecraft Java Edition
