Increase Your FPS in Any Version of Minecraft With Optifine and Fabric! (Updated 2022 Tutorial)

Hey everybody, it’s UnderMyCap, and today I’m going to be showing you how to dramatically improve your Minecraft performance. This is really cool — it makes Minecraft so much smoother and it works really well. Prior to making this video, I tested every single version: vanilla, Optifine, and Fabric, to see which delivers the best frame rates across different scenarios.

During my testing, I did a breaking test and noticed that Fabric and Optifine obviously outweigh vanilla, especially when running shaders, achieving much higher frame rates. However, I also noticed a very significant decrease in performance when playing on servers such as Hypixel with both vanilla and Optifine. Fabric, on the other hand, holds up well thanks to its optimisation through Sodium. It’s also worth noting that this is a Java Edition video — if you’re on Bedrock, I’m really sorry! For those looking for a quick win on any version, you can always turn off fancy graphics and lower your render distance to squeeze out more frames.

With all the tests done, it’s clear that Fabric is the best option right now if you want to get the most frames out of your computer. You can obviously still use Optifine, but in this guide I’m going to show you how to install and set up Fabric with Iris Shaders for the best results.

What is Fabric?

Fabric is simply another installer you can add to Minecraft. It slots straight into the launcher, similar to how Optifine works if you’ve used that before. It gives you access to a range of optimisation mods that can seriously boost your performance.

Step 1: Downloading and Installing Fabric

Before getting started, if you are unsure about any of these steps, please make sure to ask a parent or guardian for help, and always make sure you are using safe and official links. Head over to fabricmc.net — this is where you can get the official download. It’s really simple: just hit the Download button and select Download for Windows. Once the file downloads, open it up and a small window will appear. This is the Fabric installer, where you can select the Minecraft version you want to install it for. If you’re watching this at a later date, make sure to select the most recent version, and always ensure that the loader version is up to date. Once you’ve done that, hit Install.

After installation, open up your Minecraft launcher and Fabric should appear as a new profile. If it doesn’t show up, go to Installations, hit New Installation, and scroll down to where it says Fabric — then hit Done or Create. Once it’s there, hit Play to open Minecraft with Fabric for the first time before moving on to the next step.

Step 2: Downloading the Required Mods

The next step is installing three essential mods. You’re going to want to download all three of these from CurseForge, and I’ve left the links in the description of the video to make sure you go to the right location. The three mods you need are Fabric API, Iris Shaders, and Sodium. Simply hit Download on each one and save the files to your downloads folder.

Step 3: Adding the Mods to Minecraft

Now it’s time to add these mods to your Minecraft game. Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog. In the box, type %appdata%\.minecraft\ and hit Enter. This will open up your Minecraft folder. Inside, you’ll find a folder called mods — this is where all your mods live. Simply open your Downloads folder alongside it and drag all three mod files into the mods folder. Once they’re in there, you’re good to go!

I personally also use a couple of additional optimisation mods like Auto Brightness alongside these. I haven’t seen a massive performance increase from those extras, but they do contribute and are worth including. Once all your mods are in the folder, simply open Minecraft again and your mods will be loaded up and ready to go.

What to Expect After Installation

Once everything is set up, you’ll have an optimised Minecraft experience. You’ll notice this straight away when you head into your Video Settings, which will now have a much more expanded set of options. From here, you can install shader packs, increase visual quality, and fine-tune everything to your liking. Fabric is really awesome with its controls and the level of customisation it provides.
