Video Summary
In this tutorial, I explain how to use the Select Tool in Rec Room’s Maker Pen, which is part two of my Maker Pen series. The Select Tool allows you to select multiple items, copy and paste them, group objects, and adjust selection sizes for both fine and detailed work. I also demonstrate advanced features like splitting shapes out of containers and centering pivots to help you efficiently manage and organize your creations in Rec Room.
How To Use The Select Tool In Rec Room | Maker Pen Tutorial
Hey guys, how are you going? It’s UnderMyCap and welcome back to another video! Today I’m going to be teaching you how to use all of the Maker Pen tools. This is part two of the series and in this part we are going to be covering all of the select features. If you prefer to watch the video version, you can check it out here!
What Is The Select Tool?
To get started, pull out your Maker Pen and open up the Maker Pen menu. The select button is right next to the create button, so go ahead and click that. Once you click the select button you’ll see a whole bunch of options pop up on the side. The select tool is really useful if you want to copy and paste items, group items, or move a certain number of items all at once. Instead of moving one singular item, you can select multiple items at the same time, making building in Rec Room much more efficient!
Selecting and Deselecting Items
Once you grab the select tool, you can select multiple items and they will start to group all together. You’ll notice one large highlight appears around everything you have selected. You can also deselect items just as easily. A really cool feature of the select tool is that if you hold down your trigger in VR, a little yellow globe appears and you can use it to select everything within that area all at once. If you do the same thing again over an already selected area, it turns slightly red, meaning you are now deselecting items from your current selection. This is really handy if you just want to remove a few things from your selection quickly.
The Options Menu
Once you have selected all of the items you want, a small button will appear that says “Options.” Inside this menu there are a number of useful features. One thing worth noting is that you can actually create an invention to display on your profile from this menu, which will be covered in a separate video. Going back to the main options, with your items selected you can do a number of things. You can copy all of the selected items and paste them in a different area. You’ll also notice a clipboard and a “Paste Recent” option appear, so you can see what you have recently copied and paste everything again with ease. Once you have copied your items, closing the menu will allow you to place everything you copied directly into the world.
Changing The Selection Size
Another great feature of the select tool is the ability to change the size of the selection area. This is really helpful whether you are doing fine detailed work or selecting a large area all at once. By clicking on the selection size button you will find options including Precise, Small, Large, and Analog. Precise gives you a very small selection area for detailed work, while Analog gives you the largest selection size available, which is great when you need to select a big area quickly.
Splitting Shapes and Containers
When you have shapes inside a container, the select tool gives you even more control. If you select certain items within a container, a small purple options button will appear. Inside this menu you will find the “Split Shapes” option, which allows you to split selected shapes out of the container they are currently in. This is a really powerful feature for organising your builds. Containers will be covered in more detail in a separate video, but knowing how to split shapes is a great skill to have. Also inside the options menu is the “Center on Pivot” feature. The pivot is essential for knowing where an item will rotate from, and if it is not centered you can easily recenter it using the select tool.
Wrapping Up
That covers all of the main functions of the select tool in Rec Room! I hope you found this helpful and I am really happy with all of the positive feedback from the first video in this series. I am looking forward to continuing it and teaching you everything there is to know about the Maker Pen. If you haven’t watched part one yet, make sure to check it out as it is a great foundation for everything we cover here. I hope you have an awesome day and I’ll see you in the next one!
