This AI Robot in Rec Room Will Blow Your Mind!

Video Summary

I’ve explored Rec Room’s brand new AI bot called Roomie, which is designed to enhance the gaming experience by answering questions, providing facts, spawning in-game items, and using visual detection to analyze the environment. From answering math equations to recommending outfits and helping players navigate the game, Roomie represents an innovative first iteration of AI integration in social VR gaming that shows real potential despite some early bugs. While I’m cautious about AI’s broader impact, this feature demonstrates a meaningful use case for AI companions in gaming that could help combat loneliness in VR and improve overall player engagement.

This AI Robot in Rec Room Will Blow Your Mind!

AI is revolutionizing the world of gaming — well, kind of! Today I want to talk about a really cool AI that Rec Room has introduced, and I have to say, it is quite innovative. Outside of Fortnite’s Darth Vader AI moment (if you remember that!), I haven’t seen many other video games introducing AI components in this way. So let’s dive into what makes this so exciting.

Meet Roomie — Rec Room’s New AI Bot

The star of today’s post is Roomie, the brand new AI bot that Rec Room has introduced to subscribers in-game. Its purpose seems to be helping you out and keeping you company — essentially acting as an AI companion in VR. Rec Room’s own answer to feeling lonely in virtual reality! When I asked Roomie about it directly, the response was: “I’m here to keep you company, have a laugh, and make sure you’re having a blast in Rec Room. Anything fun you want to try out today?” — and honestly, that pretty much sums it up.

What Can Roomie Actually Do?

I decided to put Roomie through its paces inside my dorm room (it gets a little hectic in public spaces — turns out Roomie is extremely popular!) to cover some of its most impressive features. These features really do showcase a very innovative way of using AI inside of video games.

Answering Questions

The first thing you can do is simply talk to Roomie and ask it questions. Whether it’s a quick math equation — “Hey Roomie, what is 37 + 5?” and back comes “37 + 5 is 42” — or a fun general knowledge question like asking about an Australian barbecue, Roomie handles it all. So instead of having to Google something, you can just ask your little AI companion right there in the game. Pretty handy!

Spawning In-Game Items

Another fun feature is that you can ask Roomie to spawn in food and drinks for you. I asked for a latte, and while Roomie couldn’t quite manage that, it offered up a donut or a slice of cake instead — and sure enough, a little donut appeared right there in the room. It can spawn in consumables to help you enjoy your in-game experience, which is a lovely little touch.

Visual Detection

This one genuinely impressed me. Roomie actually has vision. You can point it towards objects or areas in the room and ask what it sees. I pointed it at a wall display without telling Roomie what it was, and it correctly identified it as “a virtual screen showing different games and activities in Rec Room.” This vision feature means you could use Roomie to read whiteboards, solve equations, and more — the possibilities are really interesting.

Outfit and Item Recommendations

One feature I genuinely did not expect was Roomie’s ability to help you shop. When I asked it to find some blue outfit items in the game, it not only found them but actually put the clothes on my character right there in the dorm room. It’s a really unique way to bring shopping and monetisation into the game in a natural, interactive way.

My Thoughts on AI in Gaming

It is worth keeping in mind that this is the first iteration of this kind of technology inside a social video game, so there are going to be a few bugs and moments where it feels a little rough around the edges. But honestly, for a first version, I think this is super powerful and incredibly promising. I’m not someone who is a huge fan of AI taking over everything — though I do use it myself, so I can’t be hypocritical about it! I do think there is a genuine space for this kind of technology, and it will just take a little time to really hit its stride. So far, people are really enjoying it, and I think Roomie is a genuinely cool feature for Rec Room.

I would love to know what you think about AI being introduced into social VR games like this. Is it the future of gaming companions, or is it a little too much? Let me know in the comments!
