NEW How to craft Netherite Armor & Tools in Minecraft
Video Summary
In this video I show you how to upgrade diamond gear to netherite in Minecraft 1.20 using the new smithing template system. I explain where to find netherite upgrade templates (bastions) and why you should duplicate them with diamonds and netherrack before using one. Then I walk through the new smithing table UI, placing the template, diamond armor or tools, and a netherite ingot to complete the upgrade. I also quickly demonstrate the new armor trim patterns by combining a trim template, your armor piece, and a material like diamond or emerald for custom designs.

Hey everyone, it’s Under My Cap, and welcome back. Today I’m going to show you how to upgrade to Netherite armor in the new Minecraft 1.20 update.
This update is super cool, and there are a bunch of new features to cover. One of the most important changes Mojang added is a new crafting method for making Netherite armor.
Netherite Upgrades in 1.20: Smithing Templates
In 1.20, there’s a new item called a Smithing Template. You can obtain it from Bastions, and it’s required for upgrading diamond gear into Netherite.
If you want to upgrade to Netherite, you cannot do it without the template. However, while you can’t craft the first template from scratch, you can duplicate templates once you have one.
How to Duplicate a Smithing Template
To duplicate a Smithing Template in a crafting table:
Place the Smithing Template at the top, then place diamonds around a Netherack block in the recipe layout. This will give you two templates as the result.
It’s highly recommended that you duplicate your template before upgrading anything, so you don’t accidentally use your only one.
How to Upgrade Diamond Armor to Netherite
Once you have your Smithing Template and a few Netherite Ingots, head over to a Smithing Table. In the new update, the Smithing Table has a new interface and upgrade system.
You’ll see a new upgrade area. To upgrade gear:
Put your Smithing Template in the left slot. Then place the diamond armor piece in the next slot, and your Netherite Ingot in the final slot.
The table will display a really cool 3D preview of what the upgrade will look like. Click the result to complete the upgrade.
You can repeat the same process for all armor pieces to make a full Netherite set. Once you equip it, you’ll see the achievement pop up and you’ll be fully geared in Netherite.
That’s how you get Netherite armor in Minecraft 1.20.
Bonus Feature: Add Patterns to Your Armor
Another really cool thing in 1.20 is that you can now add patterns to your armor. Yes, you heard that right—armor patterns.
There are a bunch of different Smithing Templates you can find while playing Minecraft, and each one can apply a unique trim style.
How to Apply an Armor Pattern (Armor Trim)
To add a pattern, go back to the Smithing Table. This time, instead of using the Netherite Upgrade template, you’ll use a pattern template.
Place:
1) The pattern template in the template slot
2) The armor piece you want to customize
3) A material such as a diamond or emerald (or other valid material)
This applies a decorative trim to your armor. Once you put it on, you’ll see the pattern in-game—and it looks awesome.
Thanks so much for watching. If you enjoyed, don’t forget to leave a like and subscribe, and I can’t wait to see you in the next video. See you!
