Video Summary
In this tutorial, I demonstrate how to use the Select Tool in Rec Room’s Maker Pen to efficiently select and move multiple objects at once. I cover essential features like selecting individual items, deselecting objects, using area selection by holding the trigger, and adjusting the drag select size settings from analog to precise for more accurate object selection. This tool is particularly useful for moving multiple objects uniformly without having to relocate each item individually.

Hey everybody, it’s UnderMyCap and welcome back to another video! Today I’m going to be showing you how to use the Select Tool in Rec Room’s Maker Pen. This is Part Two of the series, so if you haven’t seen how to use the Create Tool yet, I 100% recommend you start right at the beginning and watch the first video — it’s linked in the playlist down below. But without further ado, let’s get straight into it! To set the scene, I had a bit of a mess behind me from Valentine’s Day — a whole bunch of boxes full of love hearts. The problem was that some of the boxes were floating in the air (gravity exists, people!) and one box was actually underground. So the goal was to use the Select Tool to select and move these objects into their correct positions on the floor. That’s exactly what makes the Select Tool so powerful — it saves you from having to move each item one by one. To get started, open up your Maker Pen and click on Select. Once you do, you’ll notice a few options pop up. You’ll see Select Tool Functions, which includes the ability to copy and paste with the Select Tool, as well as Select Tool Settings and the usual Snapping options. We’ll cover snapping more when we get into the Move Tool in a future video, but for now let’s focus on selecting objects. Once you’ve clicked on Select, you can start selecting objects. Using your mouse or the trigger on your VR handheld device, simply click on the objects you want to select — then use the Move Tool (the green button) to move them up, down, or wherever they need to go. We’ll go deeper into the Move Tool in the next video, but it works hand-in-hand with the Select Tool for repositioning objects. One thing you might notice is that when you select a box, not everything inside of it gets selected automatically — especially if there are a lot of individual objects inside. That’s where the next part of the Select Tool becomes really handy, because it allows you to select and deselect multiple items very quickly. Once the boxes were on the floor, I still had hearts floating in the air. Before selecting those, I first needed to deselect what was already selected. There are two easy ways to do this. You can either click off into the distance away from any objects, or if you already have objects selected, you can simply double-click on one of them and it will deselect everything. Double-clicking works with both your mouse and your VR controller. Here’s where things get really efficient! You can select a large number of objects at once by holding down the trigger handle and dragging it around the area you want to select. This creates a selection bubble that captures everything it touches. Just be mindful — if you accidentally select something you didn’t mean to (like the floor), you can easily deselect individual objects by pointing your trigger handle at the unwanted object and clicking on it. That removes it from your selection without affecting everything else. You may also notice a yellow ball that appears when you’re in selection mode. If you hold it down on an already-selected item, it switches into deselection mode, shown as a red bubble. Anything the red bubble touches gets removed from your current selection. This is super useful for fine-tuning what you have selected — you can add things back in by holding down and grabbing them again. One challenge I ran into was that the selection bubble was a little too large when trying to select fine objects like the individual hearts. Luckily, you can adjust this! Open up the Maker Pen, go to Select Tool Settings, and scroll down to find the Drag Select Size option. The Analog setting gives you the largest bubble, while Precise gives you a tiny circle that’s extremely accurate for selecting small or closely grouped objects. I set mine to Small for this situation, but you have a variety of options to choose from depending on what you’re working with. With the size set to Small, the selection circle becomes almost invisible it’s so tiny — but it means you can select individual hearts one by one without accidentally grabbing anything else nearby. Once I had all the hearts selected, I used the Move Tool to bring them down onto the floor. And just like that, everything was neatly in place! Another great use case for the Select Tool is moving multiple objects at the same time while keeping them all uniform. For example, if you have a bunch of poles or structures that aren’t connected as an invention, you can select them all with the Select Tool and move them together. This ensures that nothing ends up at a different height or out of alignment — everything moves as one. It’s a massive time saver compared to adjusting each object individually.
