How to GET and USE Barrier Blocks in Minecraft Java/Bedrock

Video Summary

In this video, I demonstrate how to obtain and use barrier blocks in both Minecraft Java and Bedrock editions using the simple command “/give @s barrier”. Barrier blocks are invisible blocks that prevent players from entering certain areas or moving past them, making them useful for creative building projects like creating hanging signs as I showed in a previous video. The blocks display particles and a black box when placed, allowing creators to see them while remaining invisible to players in survival mode.

How to Get and Use Barrier Blocks in Minecraft Java & Bedrock

If you’ve ever wanted to block off certain areas in your Minecraft world or stop players from moving through specific spots, then barrier blocks are exactly what you need! In this post, I’m going to walk you through everything you need to know about barrier blocks — what they are, how they work, and most importantly, how to get them in both Java and Bedrock Edition.

What Is a Barrier Block?

A barrier block is an invisible block in Minecraft that prevents players from entering or passing through certain areas. Because it’s completely invisible, it’s a fantastic tool for map makers, server owners, or anyone who wants to create restricted zones without breaking the visual look of their build. When you place a barrier block, a burst of particles will appear to show you exactly where it has been placed, making it easy to keep track of while you’re building.

How Does It Work?

In survival mode, barrier blocks cannot be broken by players, which makes them incredibly reliable for keeping areas secure. Players in survival will see a small black box indicator around the block, but they won’t be able to pass through or destroy it. This makes barrier blocks one of the most powerful and practical tools available for controlling player movement in your world.

How to Get a Barrier Block

Getting a barrier block is super simple! Whether you’re playing on Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, the command is exactly the same. Just open your chat or command console and type the following:

/give @s barrier

That’s all there is to it! Once you run the command, the barrier block will be added straight to your inventory and you’re ready to start placing them wherever you need.

A Creative Use Case

One of my favourite ways to use barrier blocks is to make hanging signs possible in situations where they otherwise wouldn’t work. By placing barrier blocks as a base, you can attach hanging signs to them and create a floating effect — since the barrier block itself is invisible, it looks like the signs are suspended in mid-air. It’s a really clever trick that adds a great visual touch to any build!
