Building Better Rooms – Replicator Tutorial

Video Summary

In this tutorial, I show you how to use the Replicator tool in Rec Room to clone objects throughout your room. I walk through enabling beta creative tools, finding the replicator in the maker pen, wiring objects into it using containers, and spawning cloned items with customizable positions and player assignments. This powerful tool allows you to replicate interactive objects efficiently while keeping your circuits organized within containers.

Hey everybody, it’s Under My Cap and welcome back to another video! Today I’m going to be showing you how to use the Replicator inside of Rec Room. If you’d prefer to watch the full tutorial, you can check it out here: Building Better Rooms – Replicator Tutorial.

As you can see in the video, I have these awesome vending machines, and if you click on them, you’ll notice they spawn in an item. Now, these items are completely replicated — they’re not actually real items. They’re just replicated, and you can even return them. So let’s get straight into how the Replicator works!

Step 1: Enable Beta Tools in Your Room

The first thing to note is that you actually have to enable beta tools inside of your room before you can access the Replicator. To do that, go to your room on your watch, click on Settings, click on Main Settings, and then scroll all the way down. You’ll notice a toggle called Allow Creative Tools Beta Content — you want to turn that on. Just be warned that once you turn this on, you can’t turn it off. But that’s how you unlock the Replicator!

Step 2: Finding the Replicator with Your Maker Pen

Once beta tools are enabled, pull out your Maker Pen. From there, go to Palette, navigate to Circuits, and simply search up “Replicator”. The Replicator looks like a purple beam — just click on it to place it. You’ll now have this cool little purple glowing object in your room. Whatever shapes you connect to the Replicator, you can clone them inside the room!

Step 3: Understanding the Replicator Chip

When you spawn in a Replicator, a chip also comes along with it, and this chip is the main brain of how the Replicator works. If you click on the Execution Chip, you can spawn an object in — which basically means it will clone whatever is placed on the Replicator plate into the world. You also have a Position option for where you want the replicated object to spawn, which defaults to 0, 0, 0. There’s also an Orientation setting, which changes the orientation of the spawned object. Additionally, there’s an Assign to Player option, which is a very useful feature — it lets you assign objects to a specific player so that no other players can interact with that object. The Player field below that simply determines which player you want to assign the object to.

Step 4: Placing an Item Inside the Replicator

In Rec Room 2, there’s a system called Containers, and you can think of the Replicator itself as a container. To demonstrate, I spawned in one of my own creations — a cat. Let’s say we want to replicate this cat throughout a room. First, your object needs to be inside its own container, which my cat already is. Then, open your Maker Pen, click on the Wire button (the second purple button next to Configure), click on the cat, and drag it to the Replicator. You’ll notice the cat snaps to the Replicator, which means it’s now inside of it!

Step 5: Spawning a Replicated Object

To keep things simple, I’ll demonstrate spawning a replicated cat at the same position as the original. To do this, grab the object board using the identifier at the top and drag it to the Position field — this will create a Get Position Chip, which just gets the position of where the Replicator is. You can also drag this to the Orientation field. Once that’s set up, click on Spawn Next Object and you’ll notice another cat has spawned! If you drop your Maker Pen, the original item inside the Replicator disappears, which is why you’ll see the replicated version take its place. Click Spawn Next Object again and you’ll now have two cats spawned into the room.

The really cool thing about Replicators is that because they work with containers, you can containerise your circuits inside of them. This means replicated objects can still be interactive — great for things like interaction volumes and similar setups!

Wrapping Up

That’s a brief introduction into how to use the Replicator in Rec Room! Replicators can be used for a huge range of purposes, and I hope this tutorial has helped you get started. If you found this useful, make sure to leave a like and subscribe — I can’t wait to see you in the next one!
