How to Install & Play Minecraft Snapshots – Java Edition Tutorial

Hey everybody, it’s UnderMyCap, and welcome back to another post! Today I’m going to be showing you how to use snapshots in Java Edition. A lot of you have been commenting that you can’t actually access the new update for Minecraft, and that is because you have to install Data Packs. So without further ado, let’s get into how to fix that!

If you’d prefer to follow along visually, you can watch the full video tutorial here: How to Install & Play Minecraft Snapshots – YouTube

Step 1: Launch the Latest Snapshot

First things first, make sure you are on the latest snapshot in the Minecraft Java Edition launcher. Once you have confirmed you are running a snapshot, go ahead and hit Play to load into the game. Once the game is open, you are ready to move on to the next step.

Step 2: Create a New World

Unfortunately, you cannot add the new update content to your existing worlds — you will need to create a brand new world. This actually makes a lot of sense, as Mojang doesn’t want to be responsible for any potential damage to your existing saves. To get started, hit Create New World and set the game mode to Creative.

Step 3: Enable the Data Packs

This is the most important step! Before creating your world, navigate to the Data Packs section. Here you will see a Data Pack labelled Bundles and the Update 1.20 pack — this Data Pack essentially contains the entire new update. Click the little blue arrow on both packs to move them into the selected area, then hit Done. After that, hit Proceed and then Create New World.

Step 4: Enjoy the New Update!

Once you’re in your new world, open your inventory and you will notice all of the new 1.20 update content is now available! If you are on a future snapshot version, you will of course see whatever new content corresponds to that version. This is all the exciting new stuff that Mojang has been showcasing, and now you can explore it all for yourself.

What About Bedrock Edition?

It is worth noting that this method is specific to Java Edition and does not apply to Bedrock Edition. Bedrock has its own separate version called Minecraft Preview, which is only available on Windows 10 and Windows 11. So if you are a Bedrock player, keep an eye out for that instead.

I hope this post helped clear things up — this is a question that has been coming up so much lately, so hopefully now it all makes sense! If this helped you out, I would really appreciate it if you left a like on the video and subscribed to the channel. Thank you so much for reading, and I can’t wait to see you in the next one. See ya!
