Video Summary
In this tutorial, I show you how to obtain and use the light block feature in Minecraft Bedrock Edition, which allows you to create custom lighting without placing visible torches. Using the command /give @s light_block, you can create light sources with adjustable brightness levels from 0 to 15, with 15 being equivalent to a normal torch. This feature is currently exclusive to Bedrock Edition and provides a great way to make your builds look lit up while maintaining a clean aesthetic.

How To Get And Use The Minecraft Light Block – Step By Step Tutorial (Bedrock Edition)
Hey everybody, it’s UnderMyCap and welcome back to another video! Today I’m going to be showing you how to obtain and use the light block in Minecraft Bedrock Edition. Before we get started, please note that this will not work in Java Edition, as it is currently an exclusive feature to Bedrock. If it does come out in Java Edition in the future, I’ll try and make a video on it then!

Why Use The Light Block?
To give you a bit of context, imagine you have a wall that looks great during the daytime. But at night, you actually want to see that wall lit up and looking really cool — without having to stick ugly torches all over it. That’s exactly where the light block comes in. It’s a fantastic way to add lighting to your builds without compromising on aesthetics.
How To Obtain The Light Block
To get the light block, all you need to do is use a command. Open your chat and type /give @s light_block. Once you’ve done that, you’ll receive the light block in your inventory. When you place it down, you’ll hear it place — but nothing will appear to happen, and that’s completely fine! This simply means we haven’t indicated what light level we want yet. By default, this gives us a light level of zero, meaning no light is emitted at all.
Understanding Light Levels
There are 15 different variations of the light block, each corresponding to a different light level ranging from 1 through to 15. To get a specific light level, you go back to the same command and add a number at the end. For example, typing /give @s light_block 1 1 will give you a light block with a data value of 1, which is the lowest light level. You’ll notice the icon in your inventory looks slightly different depending on the light level — the higher the level, the more light is shown on the icon.
At light level 1, the glow is very faint. If you increase it to around 5, it starts to become a little more noticeable and you can see it lighting up the surrounding area. It’s also worth noting that placing a solid block — like cobblestone — on top of the light block will remove it, so keep that in mind when building.
Jumping up to level 10, the brightness becomes significantly more noticeable. It’s not quite as bright as a torch at this point, but it’s getting close. When you go all the way up to the maximum level of 15, it gives you the equivalent brightness of a standard torch. In fact, when placing a torch right next to a level 15 light block, you’ll notice almost no difference in light output — the torch may be ever so slightly brighter, but they are very comparable.
Quick Summary
To recap, the light block is a brilliant tool for adding invisible, customisable lighting to your Minecraft Bedrock builds. Use /give @s light_block to obtain it, and adjust the data value between 1 and 15 to control how bright you want the light to be. A value of 0 produces no light, and a value of 15 produces light equivalent to a torch. It’s a simple but incredibly useful feature for anyone who wants clean, torch-free lighting in their world.
