Did Minecraft Just Added A New Mob?
Video Summary
I spotted a new Minecraft snapshot announcement and noticed it added “mannequin entities,” a technical mob you can only spawn with /summon. I jumped into the snapshot to test it and found it’s basically a player-like avatar that behaves like a living entity, with player-style health that can take damage and potentially hold/wear gear. It seems perfect for displays in vanilla worlds, and it even interacts with things like boats. If you want a deeper breakdown, I’ll make a tutorial showing what you can do with mannequins.

This morning, I logged onto Discord. I’m in a server that posts all of Minecraft’s announcements, so I saw there was a new snapshot. At first, I assumed it was just a small update—things like “placing an ender chest stops the world from crashing” and “world borders are now per dimension,” which is honestly super cool.
But as I kept scrolling, I noticed something that really stood out: under the “Data Pack Version” section, it said they had added mannequin entities. That immediately caught my attention.
What the Snapshot Notes Say
In the details, it explains that they’ve added a new type of technical entity called the Minecraft mannequin, and that it can only be spawned using the /summon command.
It also says mannequins are like a player avatar, and the interesting part is that they function like a living entity. That means they can:
Hold and wear equipment, have attributes and effects, take damage, and more.
Testing the Mannequin in the Snapshot
So, without further ado, I loaded up the snapshot. I created a Creative world and turned cheats (commands) on so I could test this properly.
Once I spawned in, I opened chat and typed:
/summon minecraft:mannequin
And… wow. It spawned what looks like Steve, but with short arms. At first glance, it doesn’t seem to do anything on its own—it just stands there.
Does It Take Damage Like a Player?
Next, I tried hitting it to see how it behaves. It does take damage, and it looks like it has about the same amount of health as a player, which is really interesting for something that’s described as a “technical entity.”
Can It Pick Up Items or Use Equipment?
Then I tested whether it could interact with items. I tried summoning another mannequin and dropping a sword to see if it would pick it up. I also tried clicking around to see if I could equip it in some way.
From what I could tell in this quick test, it doesn’t automatically pick items up the way some mobs do. But since it’s described as a living entity that can hold and wear equipment, I’m guessing there’s a command-based way to equip it—maybe through NBT data or attributes added to the summon command.
At the moment, it seems like it’s mainly designed to stand in place, which still has a lot of potential. It could be a really clean way to display armor and gear in vanilla Minecraft without mods.
Why This Could Be a Big Deal
Servers have had similar systems for a long time using plugins and custom entities, but seeing something like this added to vanilla—usable even in single-player with no mods—is pretty exciting.
It also makes me wonder if Mojang is preparing to expand this concept later. Since the mannequin behaves like a real living entity, it wouldn’t be surprising if they eventually add more functionality—maybe AI or more interaction options.
More Experiments (Like Boats)
I started thinking: what else can you do with it? For example, can you put it into a boat? That’s where things start getting really interesting, because now you can imagine using mannequins for maps, animations, minigames, or just more realistic displays.
Next Steps
If you’re interested in seeing what you can actually do with the mannequin, I can try to make a tutorial showing how to equip it and make it do more advanced things. Since this is brand new and only available in a snapshot, there’s a lot to explore.
Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you in the next one.
