✔️ALL NEW Particles In Minecraft + Secret Nether Update Particles! ✔️ (Java)
Video Summary
In this video I showcase nine new Minecraft 1.16 Java particles I found by digging through the game files, and I explain why they’re some of the best-looking particles Minecraft has had. I go through each particle one by one, show what it looks like in-game, and give the exact /particle command and particle name so you can use them yourself. Highlights include reverse portal, entity_effect, dripping/landing obsidian tear, white ash, ash, warped spore, soul, and the awesome soul fire flame. If I missed any, let me know in the comments and I’ll make an update.

Hey everybody, it’s UnderMyCap, and welcome back. Today I’m going to show you nine new particles that were added to Minecraft 1.16. These are some of the best-looking particles in the game because they fit the Nether’s themes really well and make builds and effects look even better.
I’ll go through each particle, show you the particle name, and include an example command you can run for each one. After digging through the files, these are all the particles I managed to find—so let’s get started.
Reverse Portal
You’ve probably seen the normal Nether portal particle before. The standard “portal” particle gets pulled toward the center, but this one behaves differently: it stays in place and shrinks.
This is great for hidden-portal effects (where the player walks into an invisible portal and teleports), or for creating a slow, stylish walking trail. If you want particles to follow a player, I also have an advanced particle tutorial on my channel showing how to make particle trails.
Example command:
/particle minecraft:reverse_portal ~ ~2 ~ 3 4 3 0 1 force
Note: Using force makes the particle visible from farther away; normal will stop rendering once you’re far enough away.
Entity Effect
Next is Entity Effect. You may have seen it before—it’s the particle effect used around entities, and by default it looks like a dark bluish-black swirl.
In this update, you can also alter its appearance. For example, increasing the speed can make the swirl appear more colorful, which is useful for multicolored effects.
Particle name:
minecraft:entity_effect
Example command:
/particle minecraft:entity_effect ~ ~2 ~ 0 0 0 1 50 force
Dripping Obsidian Tear
This particle is the drip that falls from crying obsidian. You’ll see the droplet form, turn into a falling drip, and then hit the ground with a small splat.
This looks great as a walking trail effect, or even as a “rain” effect if you increase the spread so it spawns across a wider area.
Particle name:
minecraft:dripping_obsidian_tear
Example command:
/particle minecraft:dripping_obsidian_tear ~ ~2 ~ 3 3 3 0 20 force
Landing Obsidian Tear
If you only want the impact “splat” portion (without the droplet spawning and falling), use the landing variant. This is basically the effect you see at the moment the drip hits the ground.
Particle name:
minecraft:landing_obsidian_tear
Example command:
/particle minecraft:landing_obsidian_tear ~ ~ ~ 0 0 0 0 10 force
White Ash
White Ash appears in one of the Nether biomes and gives a windblown, atmospheric look. It doesn’t just drift in a single direction, either—it can change direction over time, which makes it feel more like a real environmental effect.
Particle name:
minecraft:white_ash
Example command:
/particle minecraft:white_ash ~ ~2 ~ 3 0 3 0 1 force
Ash
This one is simply Ash (not white ash). It’s darker, stands out well against lighter blocks, and is easier to see. Unlike white ash, it tends to fall more consistently in a single direction.
Particle name:
minecraft:ash
Example command:
/particle minecraft:ash ~ ~2 ~ 3 0 3 0 1 force
Warped Spore
Warped Spore is a pretty wild one. It’s similar to ash in the sense that it’s a floating ambient particle, but it feels more chaotic—like it’s drifting and spreading outward in a more energetic way.
This is another great option for trails or for adding atmosphere to warped-themed builds.
Particle name:
minecraft:warped_spore
Example command:
/particle minecraft:warped_spore ~ ~2 ~ 3 0 3 0 10 force
Soul
Soul is one of the coolest-looking particles because of its animation. It transitions in a really distinctive way and ends up with that iconic blue soul-style effect.
This is the particle you see when using Soul Speed—when you walk over soul sand with Soul Speed boots. It’s perfect for trails and custom effects, especially if you pair it with command-based particle-follow mechanics.
Particle name:
minecraft:soul
Example command:
/particle minecraft:soul ~ ~1 ~ 0.2 0.2 0.2 0 20 force
Soul Fire Flame
Last (and my personal favorite) is Soul Fire Flame. It’s a blue flame, and it looks absolutely incredible—especially at night, where the glow really stands out compared to a normal flame.
Particle name:
minecraft:soul_fire_flame
Example command:
/particle minecraft:soul_fire_flame ~ ~1 ~ 0.2 0.2 0.2 0 20 force
Final Notes
That’s everything I found for the new particles in this update. If you know of any more, feel free to share them in the comments. I read and respond to a lot of them, and I’m always open to video suggestions too.
If new particles get added later, I’ll make another update. In the meantime, you can check out my website and blog for particle command posts and tutorials, and you can follow my socials (linked in the description) for behind-the-scenes updates.
Thanks for watching, and I’ll see you in the next video.
